WIN!!! A wonderful addition to your children’s bookcase with this Tidy Book’s book review and competition post. You can win your child a copy of Pinocchio Comes to Life, from the new ‘Toy Stories’ series from Miles Kelly. We have five brand spanking new copies to giveaway!!!
The publisher Miles Kelly has just launched a series of ten books that are aimed for children to get lost in their own imaginations. Using a collection of extracts from classic stories the books aim to bring toys to life for children.
If you, or your child, has a favourite toy they will love these books and find one that features their particular favourite play thing.
Well loved characters, such as Tom Sawyer, Raggedy Ann, and – in this particular giveaway book we have – Pinocchio.
Each book contains four separate ‘toy story’ tales, that are sympathetically told for a younger age group.
Whether children are familiar with the stories or not, they will find them entertaining and easy to relate to.
On behalf of Miles Kelly, Tig Thomas has compiled these books and extracts together. She has over 25 years experience of children’s period fiction and hopes to inspire children’s reading with these classics from wonderful storytellers.
Toy Stories is a collection of 10 books, each containing four separate tales. The books were released in February 2014, retail for £5.99 each, and are available at a discount on the Miles Kelly website.
And we have five copies of Pinocchio Comes to Life to give away.

WHAT THE PARENT THOUGHT
You can’t beat a classic tale. Well you can, I guess, but there are some stories that it should almost be a right of children to hear, or read.
These are definitely books that contain stories and tales of that ilk.
The books look wonderful, and I noticed a sort of shine on them that makes them a little more sparkly than your average children’s book. They are printed on pearlised paper, which really does add something to the books. It means they are almost glittery without having physical glitter, and indeed the mess that that could make.
It makes the illustrations very bright and colourful, which is great, but these books are really more about the tales in them.
These are books that you may have to be the storyteller with your children, rather than to let them loose on them solo. Ones where you may have to put a little effort in for expression and getting the tales told properly, but most certainly worth the effort.
WHAT THE TEACHER THOUGHT
Helen is an Early Years Foundation Stage manager, with many years of experience and currently has the responsibility for the education of over 170 children. She took a good look at Pinocchio Comes to Life, and this is what she thought.
“These are big books, with plenty of opportunities for children to tackle and learn quite complex language”
“They are great as the more difficult words are weaved into fantastic descriptions making them much easier for children to decipher.”
“The books don’t rely on illustrations to tell the story, instead the illustrations add colour and perhaps prompts for children to predict what is going to happen next.”
“With the stories being extracts from great books, children may also be encourage to find out more, and perhaps be interested in hearing more about a particular story or character.”
“Children will find them easy to relate to, as the books will feature toys they are familiar with, or favour themselves.”
“You can also discuss with children what happened next in a particular story, or get them to create their own tales based on the characters and toys they have just read or heard about.”
“Basically these are old school books that used appropriately really work well today.”
